Everything You Need to Know about the 2014 Acura MDX

The 2014 Acura MDX has a ton of features to offer. Whether you want a more “luxury” model, or something that is more basic, this vehicle has options available for any budget.

First, lets talk about the various types of MDX you can purchase. You have the option between front wheel drive, or four wheel drive. All Acura MDX models are four door with a capacity of seven passengers, which is very large for a vehicle of this size. When it comes to pricing, the 2014 Acura MDX trumps the competition. For instance, the base price for this vehicle is $43,185, which is considered very reasonable for a vehicle of this stature. The engine type available for this vehicle is a SOHC 24-valve V-6 with a aluminum block and aluminum heads. This vehicle also has direct fuel injection (standard on modern vehicles).

2014 MDXThe 2014 Acura MDX is considered a “vehicle for the family”; so you wouldn’t expect it to have much power, but think again! This vehicle has 290 horsepower at 6200 rpm’s; it also boasts a torque of 267. For a “family vehicle”, this car possesses a lot of “pick up”! The transmission that comes standard on the MDX is a 6-speed automatic with the option of a manual-shifting mode (this means the vehicle will be in automatic, but if you want to use the manual shifter, its available). The last thing I want to discuss about this vehicles specifications is the fuel economy. Considering fuel prices are a perpetually increasing pain in the rear end, this spec is EXTREMLY important to most. The 2014 Acura MDX gets 18-20 miles per gallon city and 27-28 miles per gallon highway. But, because this vehicle is equipped with cruise control, you can obtain higher fuel mileage in regards to highway driving (closer to 28-29 miles per gallon).

Safety is also a huge factor in the purchasing process for a vehicle of this type (family vehicle). No need to worry! This vehicle was awarded a “5 star” overall safety rating from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).

2014 Acura MDX Reviews

When this year’s model was released, the critics were not impressed (to say the least). Whether this was a knee jerk reaction from the public, or muscle heads turned “family men” hoping this vehicle was going to posses the power of a Shelby Mustang, they may have judged this vehicle to quickly. As the vehicle evolved, and new models emerged, the ratings increased exponentially. There seems to be a direct correlation between people that purchased this particular vehicle with advanced upgrades and being very happy with the Acura MDX. Vice versa, people that have purchased the 2014 Acura MDX with as little upgrades as possible have been disappointed with the vehicle, overall.

Leading me to this suggestion, if you decide to purchase this vehicle, you should equip it with some upgrades to make your drive more enjoyable. A survey was conducted to see how consumers would rate this vehicle, forty three 2014 Acura MDX vehicle owners were asked to judge the car on a few different parameters: comfort, performance, exterior styling, interior design, value for the money and reliability.

Here are the results of the survey:

  • Comfort received a 4.7 out of 5.
  • Performance received a 4.4 out of 5.
  • Exterior Styling also received a 4.4 out of 5.
  • Value for the money received a 4.1 out of 5.
  • Interior design received a 4.4 out of 5.
  • Reliability received a 4.6 out of 5.

Taking the rating of each individual and averaging them all together have generated these results.

How has the MDX Evolved

Three different generations of this particular vehicle have been released; the first generation was released from 2000 all the way through 2006, the second generation was released from 2007 through 2013, and the third generation was put into production in 2014 and is being presently produced. Many items and specifications have changed on this particular vehicle. For the most part, this vehicle has evolved for the better.

First Generation:

The first generation of the Acura MDX was a bit “rugged” when first built. The design was far from perfect; the engine was not very powerful and just about everything needed to be changed (from the wheel design, to adding more horsepower). I think this is the reason why the MDX had such a poor reputation when it was firs released. The manufacturer simply didn’t have all the kinks worked out yet.

Second Generation:

The second generation was produced from 2007 all the way up to the 2013 MDX. During this time period many of the kinks form the first generation model were worked out. For example, one of the “kinks” that was worked out was the body; the second generation has a wider track and a longer wheelbase making the vehicle look slicker and even make the vehicle more fuel-efficient. But, with this new “longer” body, visibility to the rear has worsened.

Third Generation:

The third generation is where all the pieces begin to come together. The engine issues are solved (more power is added to the MDX); the fuel economy is further improved and the interior “button clutter” is eliminated by adding a 7-inch touchscreen with haptic feedback (allows vibrations, forces and touches to control the screen).

2014 MDX Final Thoughts:

In my opinion, the 2014 Acura MDX is an AWESOME option for your family, and when I say family, I do mean “family”. This is not an SUV you want if your looking for something that’s going to turn heads when you take your girlfriend out to dinner. Instead, this vehicle is for a family that is always on the move, and looking for a vehicle that can accommodate a busy life. Not to say this vehicle is not “good looking”, in my opinion, it is VERY appealing. Add in the high safety rating, and you will surely feel comfortable riding around in this!
